    the 17th century, Fort Charlotte’s purpose was as a stronghold during

    international trade disputes, but its existence led to what would become the settlement of Lerwick.

    Completed in1884, Lerwick Town Hall came from a period of expansion

    for the town due to the

    boom in herring fishing and the wealth it brought with it.
